Vortrag mit Buchautor Uwe Schulte-Varendorff am 16.Oktober

„General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck – Ehrenbürger der Stadt Saarlouis - Kolonialheld für Kaiser und Führer“ ist der Titel eines spannenden Vortrages des Historikers und Autors Uwe Schulte-Varendorff, zu dem die „Aktion 3.Welt Saar“ einlädt:

Die Moderation und Einführung in das Thema übernimmt Rüdiger Fries vom Vorstand der „Aktion 3.Welt Saar“. Der Buchautor Uwe Schulte-Varendorff stellt an diesem Abend seine aktuelle und viel beachtete Biografie über Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck „Kolonialheld für Kaiser und Führer“ (Christoph Links Verlag, Berlin, 2006) vor, die in mehreren großen Tages- und Wochenzeitungen rezensiert wurde. Hans Peter Klauck aus Saarlouis führt anhand einiger Fotos von Lettow-Vorbeck zu Beginn der Veranstaltung in das Thema ein. Die Veranstaltung findet statt in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stiftung Demokratie Saarland und der Heinrich Böll Stiftung Saar.

Uwe Schulte-Varendorff belegt anhand von Quellen, dass Lettow-Vorbeck 1904 an der Tötung von 60.000 Herero in Deutsch-Südwestafrika im heutigen Namibia beteiligt war, später aktiv gegen die Demokratie der Weimarer Republik kämpfte und Vorträge für die Nationalsozialisten hielt. Auch am ultrarechten Kapp-Putsch 1920 beteiligte er sich. Lettow-Vorbeck ist seit 1956 Ehrenbürger der Stadt Saarlouis.

Die „Aktion 3.Welt Saar“ setzt sich für eine Neubewertung der Person Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck ein. „Wer die Demokratie bekämpft und die Nazis unterstützt hat, ist für mich kein Vorbild. Die Ehrenbürgerschaft halte ich für nicht zeitgemäß“, so Rüdiger Fries.
In Saarlouis ist heute noch eine Straße nach ihm benannt und an seinem Geburtshaus in der Saarlouiser Fußgängerzone (Silberherzstraße) prangt die Innschrift: „Der unbesiegte, ritterliche Verteidiger Deutsch-Ostafrikas im Weltkriege 1914-1918 General Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck wurde am 20.3.1870 in diesem Hause geboren.“ „Ich halte diese Tafel für eine Verdrehung der historischen Tatsachen und eine Verhöhnung seiner Opfer. Deshalb bin ich für eine Gedenktafel an seinem Geburtshaus, mit denen seinen Opfern Respekt gezollt wird", so Rüdiger Fries.
