"Wo Bantam steht, wächst keine Gentechnik." Unter diesem Motto setzen der Naturschutzbund Saar (NABU) und die Aktion 3.Welt Saar (A3WS) mit dem Anbau von Bantam-Mai ein Zeichen gegen Gentechnik. Beide Organisationen beteiligen sich an dem bundesweiten Netzwerk, das sich für die Verbreitung dieser alten Zuckermaissorte einsetzt. Der samenfeste und gut nachbaubare Zucker-Mais kann im eigenen Garten und an anderen Stellen angebaut werden. Käuflich erhältlich ist er in dem Bistro am Stausee und im Weltladen der Aktion 3.Welt Saar. Wer Bantam-Mais anbaut, hat das Recht zu erfahren, wer in der Nachbarschaft Gentechnikmais anbaut. Denn der Bantam-Mais muss vor gentechnischer Verunreinigung, z.B. durch Pollenflug, geschützt werden. Wenn der Anbau von Bantam-Mais öffentlich gemeldet  wird, erschwert dies den Anbau von gentechnisch verändertem Mais auf Nachbarfeldern. Das Thema Gentechnik ist top-aktuell: Der Anbau der Gentechnik-Kartoffel Amflora von BASF wurde kürzlich von der CDU/FDP Koaliton genehmigt. Die EU favorisiert die Wiederzulassung des Monsanto-Gentechn-Mais MON 810.
